It was International Women's Day on Saturday, and I have one message for us:

You know what's on the other end? Nothing but a sibilant whisper.

One word repeated over and over: selfish

The voice on the other end has one hell of an effective sales script, because it doesn’t sell anything -- it just shames us out of wanting the other thing.

Our needs? Selfish.​
Our ambition? Selfish.​
Our desires? Oh honey, definitely selfish.​
​
But some women let the phone ring. They don’t answer and they DGAF.
​
So, in honor of International Women’s Day, let’s channel these real and fictional legends who give very few f*cks about anything standing between them and what they want:

🔥 Cindy Gallop: Busy dismantling rape culture globally. Founded MakeLoveNotP*rn to replace toxic narratives with healthy depictions of real, consensual sx. Unapologetically child-free and dating younger men in her 60s.

• Gives zero f*cks about: taboos, respectability politics, apologizing for wanting to improve the world and “make an absolute f*cking sh*tton of money doing it.”

🔥 Shirley Chisholm: First Black woman elected to Congress. First woman to run for U.S. president as a major party candidate. Campaign slogan: “Unbought and unbossed.”

• Gave zero f*cks about: The establishment, political gatekeeping, asking for permission.

🔥 Katharine Hepburn: Hollywood starlet expected to wear dresses. Wore pants. Had a career that spanned six decades. Told the press, “I don’t regret anything I’ve ever done; as long as I enjoyed it at the time.”

• Gave zero f*cks about: Hollywood norms, being "ladylike," whether people liked her.

🔥 Marge Gunderson (Fargo): Solved a crime spree while heavily pregnant, outsmarted everyone with Midwestern charm, never lost her cool.

• Gave zero f*cks about: Macho posturing, criminal stupidity, people confusing kindness for weakness.

🔥 Hedy Lamarr: Co-invented frequency-hopping system to secretly guide torpedoes during WW2. Hollywood bombshell in spare time.

• Gave zero f*cks about: Staying in her lane, other people's lack of imagination.

🔥 Tina Turner: Walked away from an abusive marriage with nothing, rebuilt her career from scratch, became the undisputed Queen of Rock & Roll.

• Gave zero f*cks about: Playing the victim, industry double standards, fools who thought she was past her prime.

🔥 Jessica Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?): Knew exactly what she was doing, could absolutely not be bothered justifying herself. Iconic.

• Gave zero f*cks about: Other people’s opinions about her looks, her relationship, or how a cartoon femme fatale should behave.

🔥 Malala Yousafzai: Shot in the head for advocating for girls’ education and still didn’t stop speaking out. Youngest Nobel Prize winner ever.

• Gives zero f*cks about: Terrorists, oppressive regimes, sexism.

🔥 Simone Biles: Withdrew from Olympic events for her mental health, shut down all the criticism, came back stronger, won even more medals.

• Gives zero f*cks about: Public pressure, sacrificing herself for the sake of status.
